Her role there is small, but she still manages to ooze the appeal that apparently is stronger than sex itself for some. She is enjoyable to watch, that's for sure.
And, as an extra bonus... you get a movie that you can actually watch. A bit contrived, sure, but a good film nonetheless. I saw it for the second time on the cable, and it was still fun. Buscemi is good, as he always seems.
A melancholic and touching film with not many cliche's.
Follow Ups:
She is on her way...In my home already....
Thora and Scarlett play well off each other, and Buscemi is a classic as usual. The scenes with the art teacher are priceless...Plus---it is absolutely worth every dime just to see the full dance number from "Gumnaam" on the DVD bonus features...
because Buscemi's character was a vinyl junkie. :--))
I agree with your analysis but I'm surprised you liked it, and that you're a Buscemi fan. His role in "Fargo" was a master stroke, walking that fine line between intensity and caricature.
My taste cover a VERY broad territory, and I try to keep my mind open. I also in general try to look for things to like, and both Buscemi and and the film as the whole had them. I don't know if I am really his fan, but he is definitely a good actor, who brings something to every role (those I am familiar with).
counter-culture types which I imagine a hard-charging business guy would find worthless. In more general terms, I had decided that maybe you were exposed to some parts of our culture at an age at which you couldn't any longer develop a feel for them.
My hats off to your open-mindedness and, once again, I am reminded of the futility of judging another person.
What was it in the Bible about judging people?.....
But you have show a " certaine grandeur d´esprit " now...Pinot? He-he...
....ça se mésure??
La démesure c ´est comme la decadence... Very subjective...( French accent )
...admettre le sujectivité, c'est d'être humble...

The film deals with the eternal theme of humans and their internal search for... well, some might say meaning of life, others - their place in it, but it remains the same. Doubts and loneliness, uncertainty the sense of not fitting in apply to everyone. That is kind of film I always love, if done well. I don't think it has to do with "my" culture, or yours, it is a universal human theme. It also matters little whether the story is sad or happy.
There ARE to be sure things that I might reject or refuse to accept, simply based on my late exposure to them. Certain things must be experienced at right age and right time, and if you missed it, better just leave them alone. Those, however, tend to belong in the superficial category.
BTW - I never considered myself hard-charging.

Yeah, a pretty good flick. I saw it in theatrical release, then watch the DVD a couple of weeks ago. Holds up on a second viewing. I noticed on the second viewing that there are a lot of strange people wandering in an out of the shots in the background.
