Walkabout, Performance (w/Cammell) and Don't look Now are three of my alltime faves.
I've got very mixed emotions about Russell. The only films of his I own are Women In Love and The Boyfriend.
To be "unstraight" in my book you have to be familiar with the films od Stan Brakhage.
