If not a total masterpiece. If I had access to only one film this would be the one I would choose. At the end I felt I hadn't watched a movie but somehow lived through it. Those Hong Kong'ers can really go the mile managing a film's concept and pace down to the decimal place. Impressive.

2046 is a quasi-sequel to it. It's equally, if not more, impressive.
After I posted my comment last night I ordered 2046 online. Only then did I notice that the jacket was in color. I put in another cd and wiggled the connections and, wah-lah, I discovered I watched 2046 and bonus material in glorious B&W! I thought it was made in B&W because it fits the mood perfectly! Well, I had the disk sealed up so I'll wait for the colorized version to arrive later.
