As a new owner of one of these gems, I'll tell my initial impression- WOW!!!! I can't believe you can get performance this good for so little money. It's the most exciting A/V gear I've ever bought!I'm also just shooting against a piece of drywall right now, determining seating distances & the like, while I finish my dedicated theater room. While the picture looks great on the wall, I'm most likely going to go with a Da-Lite HCCV screen in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The zoom works so well, and the picture looks so good, I can go with a fixed-height screen, as I hoped.
As for the 7' wide, once you spend some time with it you'll decide to go bigger:-) I'm going to go 10' wide, and have seating at about 12', and 16-18' behind that.
If you want more info than you can read in a weekend, try AVS forums, under$5K digital projectors. The unit's the star over there!
Regards,
Kevin

You sony vpl hs 10 projector reliablehow many hours you used it, just read a review about a guy who has had 2 0f them, i'm on my second, first one had dropped pixal then fan would not always start on startup, causing lamp warning light to cut in
How does the digital keystone correction look in practice? Since the DLP chip has a fixed resolution, this correction would seem to reduce visual resolution.
I only used it briefly when trying an initial setup, so I can't really comment on how much it affects the picture quality; it did look great, but that was my 1st look at it.One thing I did find unusual about it, while the image is geometrically corrected, the light spill around it isn't. In other words, you could have a properly shaped 16x9 image onscreen, but trapezoidal light would spill on the wall behind it. To use the sideshot for film would require velvet masking, or something similar. Maybe there's a way around this, since I really didn't play with it that much, but it could be an issue if you planned on using the feature.
Hi Kevin,I've been spending time on the HS10 pages at the avsforum. Thanks.
What's your take on fan noise? (How far from the projector do you sit? Cinema Black on or off?)
I think the fan noise issue is overblown. Yes, you can hear it, but it's quieter than a PC would be, sitting 3 feet from your head. It's a lower pitch than a PC, which makes me wonder if that's why some seem to find it such a big deal. Perhaps they're used to a certain whine, and something at a different pitch stands out. Personally, I much prefer the lower pitch to the dentists-drill sound of a PC fan.Right now it's right behind me about 3 feet & slightly above. It'll be higher & farther away in its final setup. Cinema Black is on; with it off, the noise ramps up a lot & would be annoying in reqular use.
$3k obviously buys a lot more than it did two years ago, nice!! When I bought one, I had a feeling that projectors were going to catch on like mad once the prices dropped. Looks like that can easily happen now. Why choose a big, ugly TV set over a 15 pound projector?
