A little early investigation seems to indicate that the new generation of low cost video projectors like the InFocus are a much better deal than rear projector TVs, and don't physically overwhelm a room. Since I only see them discussed for use as dedicated HT, is there something I'm missing about them that makes projectors a bad choice for general purpose TV? Is it the tuner/receiver issue? Lamp life? Sensitivity to ambient light?

But, as jk points out, it must be in a darkened room. I assume that, to a lesser extent, rear projection TVs are better without too much bright light. No problem here. We have a couple of normal CRT TVs for day viewing (not much) and do nearly all viewing at night. BTW we have a CRT projector (Barco) with 5000+ hours on it. Only wish replacement tubes were as cheap as quoted by some guy but they seem to have plenty of life left yet.
And, combine your projector with a great sound system and you will rarely want to look for entertainment outside the home. Reason - it will be inferior :-)
Generally when people talk about HT, watching TV is part of the package. It's not exclusively for watching movies. If you read a few posts, people often talk about watching sports and HDTV broadcasts. The only mark against using a front projector for everyday TV would be that the bulbs tends to wear out and cost a few bucks to replace (usually between $300-600). Most lamps are given a 2000-3000 hour life, some of that being time when the lamp has dimmed a certain degree. Watching selectively won't really be much of a drag, but turning the TV first thing when you come home and leaving it on until going to bed could place a significant drag on a projector.
I don't own one, but what I've read is that the screen that's used is very reflective. Any light source, other than the FPU, will wash out the picture. In fact, if the color of the walls and ceiling are too light colored, the reflection off the video screen itself will bounce of the walls, etc. and effect the picture.
