I'm looking at getting an Optoma HD70. Is there any reason I should go for a 50 inch Panasonic or Pioneer plasma instead? Does anyone have any experience with this projector or any projector that can share the pros and cons of having one with me? The projector will go in the basement so lighting isn't that big of an issue.Also, with a projector, what is the minimum size screen that I should use for a wow effect. There's a Da-Lite Theater Lite screen which is only 80 inches but looks good for the application I need (can't mount the screen on the wall or ceiling. Is 80 inches good enough or should I go as big as possible? The HD70 projects up to 100 inches.

I have both though the plasma resides in the bedroom and the projector in a pubic area. The plasma is used for most casual and TV viewing with exceptions (The Super Bowl, occasional HDTV broadcasts that seem appropriate to a full blown setup). The projector is used for film. Abviously the projector is also used for company.They are different experiences for me but for film I far prefer the projector. TV directors/editors often cut so rapidly that one goes bonkers with a large (100" or larger) image so I am generally more comfortable with the smaller image in TV.

A good choice, given current price/perfomance options
My Optoma HD70 is projecting bright clear images onto a 106" Gray Wolf II screen. I am very satisfied with it. Standard DVD looks excellent at a 13ft viewing disatnce and HD programming looks even better. Why is it you can't mount a pulldown sreen on your ceiling? It should be relatively easy in a basement.In favor of projectors, I would say the cost per square inch and the size of the image can't be beat. There is a remarkable difference between my old 65" RPTV and the 106" projector image in giving me that "you are there" theater experience. Setup is fairly easy. Heat and noise aren't a problem with the HD70's compact design. And using it is easy - it powers on and off in less than 30 seconds.
Against projectors, you really do need a darkened room. (However, you probably also noticed that all plasma TVs have glass screens and also require a darkened room to prevent distracting reflections.) You should take care to mount the projector so that you don't need to use keystone correction, which degrades the picture. Ceiling mounting is a little tricky with this projector because of the fixed offset.
I got my Optoma HD70 for around $900. Of course there are better 720p projectors. The Optoma HD72 is brighter, has a better lens for slightly sharper images and has color resolution. But it costs around $600 more. My theory is that my HD70 will be good for a couple of years while I wait for the cost of 1080p projectors to come down. The technology is improving so fast and the prices are dropping so quickly that it makes no sense to spend several thousand dollars now to get what will cost less than a grand very soon.
The HD70 is definitely in that sweet spot of price vs performance right now.
Good advice. I went w/ a projector a number of years ago for the size/$ benefit as well as having a relatively 'clean' den. I also did not want a big TV between my speakers. A 720p on a projector is not bad at all at 12+ feet viewing distance, and like you I plan to hold out until the 1080p projectors fall into my price range. I don't use a screen right now, but would at least try a Greywolf due to its low cost and good feedback on the net.
Ceiling mounting isn't a problem. It's the wife's approval that is the problem. I am thinking of putting the projector on the coffee table that will obviously be in front of the sitting position. The HD70 gives 28 db noise. Is this going to be a distraction? I have a NAD T753 receiver that has a fan and a Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player that also has a fan. The fan noise is noticeable but is still not distracting enough to take me out of the movie.Will any screen type do? Does it have to be a special screen (coating)?

if you can afford it as it enhances the black color much better than the normal white screen. In addition, it minimizes the hot spots if you happen to turn up the contrast to compensate for the inept brightness of some projector. With your projector, the silver gray screen with 1.2 gains is plenty.
