Whats the best 5.1 receiver under $300?
Follow Ups:
Yamaha 5240,Sears would price match for $275, they also matched the 5250 for $325 so I went with it and like it a lot. Also heard good things about Denon and Onkyo.
I just purchased a JVC RX 8000V, and couldn't be happier. It's 120W, plenty of power for my 14x12 living room. As far as I am concerned good sound quality, and plenty of digital inputs, S-video inputs, etc. I did read acouple reviews on the 7000 model that basicly said good system, but not enough power to drive a larger room. The 7000 is 100W and the 8000 is 120W. That's why I chose the 8000. Also the only difference I could see between the 8000 ($275-325 online) and the 9000 ($450-500 on line) was the remote. I'm no Audiophyle, but I enjoy watching movies and music in general, and I have been very satisfied with this receiver so far.
Probably a used piece will give you the best bang for the buck. If you can find a product line that you like, take a look at www.audioreview.com for older models that might be candidates. Then the shopping begins. The drawback, of course, is that it's tough to listen used equipment in advance of the purchase. Perhaps your friends or a local A/V dealer can steer you to good values in used equipment.
Look for the Onkyo TX-DS575s for $299.00, I've seen it that low before. Try www.onecall.com and look for their "B-goods". Just a thought, that reciever will dominate any Sony or Technics you will get new for the same money. I don't own an Onkyo, but I think they have great sound and decent looks, if I was in the market they would be on my list. Just my 2 cents.Ben
