...most showings at local theatres are sold out or nearly so thru Sunday evening. It's being presented on multiple screens at each theatre and a number of recent releases were kicked out to make room. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.....but I am. Looks like I'll be waiting to see this one. There's a message here!
I hope more of these superhero films have series ending offerings soon also.
Certain story arcs necessarily play out as expected, but the Russos made some brave decisions in the process. Plenty to enjoy and, surprisingly, did not feel like three hours at all. A worthy ending to this phase of the genre.

I found whole thing bittersweet and maybe even a bit melancholy. But yes, it was a reasonable and fitting end to this era of the franchise.
I plan on seeing this in the designed format, among people , the shared communal event having many advantages. you only live once.
I recently saw the old charlie chaplan film " The great dictator" to use an example. I had seen the film at home enough times to know some scenes and was struck by a scene where an unexploded bomb keeps aiming at him as he walks around it, in a forced inspection.
At home, I thought this was a holdover of old fashioned silent film comedy thinking, it wasn't funny, just old fashioned, kind of a slapstick scene.
However, seeing the same events on the big screen , as a part of the communal event, I found myself surprised to be laughing along with the rest of the friday night crowd at the ridiculous nonsense on the screen.
Of particular advantage to me of attending this as a communal event, is insulation from it being a big dud, I am far from a comic book fan,
(The last comic book I bought , after giving them up for mad magazine at around maybe ten years old, was when superman died, and I was very disappointed.)
But am not snob enough to pass up a good time at the movies, and going to such a big release is kind of like subscribing to mass hysteria, but in a productive way. This big of a release is a cultural event, if one doesn't ask much of culture.
My first problem is finding a suitable house, the movie was shot entirely on I max cameras. I have many nice movie houses available, many using the top barco projectors, and big screens, but know of only one that is I max, not counting the screen at the science museum.
The second problem is three d, the I max screen is at the mall and the theatre has all kinds of available showings, being a multiplex, but has only one three D , I max, showing per day.
You can appreciate my situation, I will certainly not be the only person in los angeles trying to get the designed impact of seeing this in the original format , so crowds will be a problem with one showing a day in the designed format.
Life in the big city does mean occasional crowds, but also has the advantage of three d,I max projection, I might as well enjoy what advantages a big city presents.
I used to wait until the second week to go see a big release, I didn't want the opening crowds, but also wanted the film print to be in top shape.
With digital, film wear is no longer a concern, the quality is all in the ability of the digital projector. Being retired, I can hit the scene on a tuesday or thursday, the two slowest days of the week, attendance wise. I should have a manageable situation by next week.
I recently went to a three D talk from a couple of Disney people who direct with the format. They explained some of the perspective effects needed to be considered , and what they do to prevent discomfort and avoid the view master toy viewer effects.
Where the old three D used one red, one green lens for the effect in black and white films, I was surprised to learn the modern plastic lenses use a seven spectrum line filter in the lens. I thought it was simply polarization.
Any slight difficulties to me, will very probably be worth it, including bladder considerations , to see it correctly will probably be worth the added care.
I am forever glad I saw the last mad max film in Imax three D, so know what is possible with this format. I don't expect that kind of pay off with this film , but you never know until you go., and you only one first viewing.
I made a special effort to see the 70 mm print of the last film about the D day invasion, and it was well worth it. i think it was called," normandy",not sure, but remember tom hardy as a fighter pilot with a non speaking but very strong appearance.
I enjoyed that movie so much that, when I heard the TV news people saying to be sure and see it in I max, I went again, seeing it in I max. Not the same rich look, with a step back in impact of story, but I did satisfy my curiosity, it was easy to understand the directors choice of format.
I've seen a lot of these superhero movies, and have had a lot of fun because of it, just like everyone else.
I am looking forward to some memorable entertainment with this one, in between the basketball playoffs, my primary visual entertainment these days. Have fun, that's my plan for this movie. no snacks, and I bring my own container of water.
...in my locale there are 4 general formats avail: plain ol 2D digital, 2D Dolby Atmos, 2D IMAX and 3D IMAX. I'd prefer the 3D both for the 3D but also because those auditoriums are ~ 700-800 seats so getting a good one should be easier since everything is reserve seating these days. The 3D is limited to one or two showings per day so that may be a deciding factor.
Don't think I've heard or read anything less than a positive review at this point so expectations are high.
I max three d was the way to go. I went and saw it today in that format, and the three d was very sophisticated, not distracting at all, just a depth of field enhancement, and not used a gee whiz effect at anytime.From the opening scene needle drop of traffic playing Mr. Fantasy to open the show, among fantastic Imax visuals, one can tell you are in for a well crafted movie.
Robert downey jr. is central to the movie, constructing around such a fine actor indicates the overall quality of the work.
The odd thing was three D imax was a single 2:15 showing and that auditurium had the most seats. The place was a multiplex,with a big dolby plus theatre, with 15of 18 theaters showing the movie. Most were regular format. I suppose it made some kind of financial sense , i was glad i could see it in the daytime. I usually prefer outdoor activities when the sun is out.

With three hours running time, I think I'll wait until it comes out on disc. That way I can pause it when my wife or I have to go to the bathroom.[edit] 4/28 - wifey tells me she got us tickets for the Tuesday matinee. That means that I'll have to lose at least five minutes of it explaining to her what she missed each time she goes to the bathroom.
