We've had some discussion here lately about Westerns. But not many
mentions of Lonesome Dove, which I understand from reading is supposed
to be one of the best. I've not seen it. Anyone care to comment about
when LD stands in the pantheon of great westerns?
Mike
...on this forum just a few weeks ago. Where ya been?
One of the best westerns produced in modern times IMO, from a great book, with a superb cast and very good production values. LD is fondly remembered by many of us who saw it on TV when it was first broadcast - it's one of the most popular mini-series ever.
Duvall and Jones had two of their best roles ever in this series. There are some flaws, of course, but nothing that should detract significantly from your enjoymnet of a fine entertainment.
Can't wait to see it on Blu!
...but it would be a real leap to call it a great western.
BTW, I learn about alot of films here that I otherwise would not discover. I've been turned onto some wonderful films. The only clinker was "The American Friend". What a piece of crap! I could barely finish it. I especially enjoyed "Tell No One".

My dear Mike how about a little search....Not so communicative but so much informative sometime...
" Mieux vaut une tête bien faite qu'une tête bien pleine."
In the pantheon of great made-for-TV westerns it still stands tall in my book. What an incredible concentration of acting talent on the tube: Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Angelica Huston, Frederick Forrest, Danny Glover, Chris Cooper.
A howlingly bad job of playing Blue Duck.
I'd add Rocky Schroeder to your list, he did a fine job as well.
"Poor People have been voting for Democrats for the last 50 years.......and they are still poor."
So sayeth Charles Barkley
I debated whether to add Ricky Schroder but I don't know anything of note he's done as a mature actor. He was exceptionally good as a kid playing his age in LD. As far as Forrest, I may have been momentarily blinded by his body of work with Coppola over the years, plus his star turn in Hammett.
James Garner, Sissy Spacek, Kevin Bacon, Randy Quaid, George Carlin...
"More" of everything, more humor, more action, better cinematography than "Dove"

I mean, sorry, but, I respectfully and vehemently disagree.
