"game boy" stories with interchangeable plots and actors are the norm;, and Fx rules the day and the box office.
If you're a studio head, you've got to smile.
Nothing but gravy.
No expensive writers or actors, anymore. Just technicians. And a few hacks to "adapt" graphic novels for the screen. No need even to hire someone to write a score, just pay royalties (or not, many groups like the publicity).
Meanwhile, the frogs in the audience don't know they've been boiled.
"Faster pussycat, FASTER!" is the call of the day as meth-paced cinema conquers all.
The music industry used the same mass production (which equals no creativity) formula to produce such talented and original talents like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. So now that Britney is burning out we now get WHO Miley Cyrus. But from the suits' point of view, mission accomplished. From the movie perspective, the question is who's going to replace such box office talents like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?
Oh, there are a few still out there: Nicholson, Crowe, Streep, Hoffman,
Hurt - to name only 5.

I think there are plenty of excellent actors out there.
I think there are a lot fewer quality projects for them act in and show what they can do. There are many fine actors appearing in TV, popcorn movies and blockbusters just so they can pay the rent.
As already noted, the marketplace has changed the movie product. But that doesn't mean there are no interesting, character driven movies being made, nor talneted writers and directors out there to do it. It's much harder - but not impossible.
This isn't exactly new news either LOL!
...wouldn't be hard to name a bunch of fine actors, young and old, leaving out some of the usual suspects, ala those in Mike K's post.
Yes, it can all seem bleak out there in Google-Plex land, but look at what we do have:
*still lots of great acting out there, just a little harder to find-and unavailable at the largest screens in August. I just....avoid.
*global distribution and DVD sales still allow less expensive films to turn a profit-so smaller budget movies are still being produced.
*the over-building of Megaplex theaters has given even medium-sized communities a multi-screen 'art house' theater where the smaller films can be seen on a Big Screen.
*we live in a period where, for a couple of bucks, we can rent and view thousands (and thousands) of movies, from the most widely distributed popcorn blockbuster to the most obscure Russian indie, to be viewed on large screens in the comfort of our own homes. Worst Case Scenario being every new movie produced from this point forward being a piece of shit, I could still watch a movie three times a week for the rest of my life and never see the same one twice. We're damned lucky.
*Many more, but you get my drift. Silver lining, etc.

"dammit"
What do you think REALITY TV is? They (the studios and TV networks) just don't want to pay a production company to write a script, hire professional script writers, actors, directors to do anything. They can hire a hot shot kid who calles him/her self a producer who just got out of college to take ten no-bodys to a abandoned island somewhere, shoot it compilation, and let them carve out each others guts. QUANTITY, QUANTITY! Why don't we just erect another coliseum and erect crosses and feed some minority group we don't like to the lions. Our decadence is showing big time! Ray
"I think the journey should be just as enjoyable as the destination." GRH
It's been this way for a while and has been noticeably going this way for years. Nobody should be surprised or shocked and it will just get worse until we stop going and supporting this sub-par crap.

Question "Authority", the mainstream media sucks - Go Independent and hold BOTH parties accountable instead of just the other guys!
I need music to help forget the reality of today
Soon we will have virtual stars. They will have a body double, or even nothing as the movie is filmed and add the person all through computer graphics, including computer generated voice. Though this could be real cool, just imagine Humphrey Bogart starring in a new movie being introduced by Rod Sterling, I think because it can be soooo much cheaper it will be the wave of the future.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
Here's what the ruling was recently for Marilyn Monroe:"On May 4, 2007, a judge in New York ruled that Monroe's rights of publicity ended at death. In October 2007, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 771.
The legislation, which was supported by Strasberg and the Screen Actors Guild, established that non-family members may inherit rights of publicity through the residuary clause of the deceased's will provided that the person was a resident of California at the time of death"So: if an actor is/was a resident of SoCal at the time of their deaths their Estate, if non-family inherited, will continue to maintain their publicity rights ( + presumably gain from their on-screen "reincarnation" ) Because of the "Marilyn" involvement; you can see this 2007 law is also retrospective
"In March 2008, the United States District Court in Los Angeles ruled that Monroe was a resident of New York at the time of her death, citing that the executor of her estate told California tax authorities as such, and that a 1966 sworn affidavit by her housekeeper quoted Monroe as saying that she considered New York City to be her primary residence. The decision was reaffirmed by the United States District Court of New York in September 2008"
This means that Marilyns Estate now has NO ongoing publishing rights ( Court ruled these ended with her death ) + so presumably there could be no Estate claim for any gain from "her" onscreen reincarnation in 2010 or beyond
My bet is: she is *very* likely to make a reappearance ( ! )However; California legislation for actors/actresses that were/will be SoCal residents at the time they die, will continue to have publishing rights, even if these are not willed to family members... ( eg: Trusts/Studios/friends... )
Bogart died in Los Angeles; ( and was likely resident there ) with the 2007 legislation, someone, somewhere will have the publicity rights on HB, with the result "he" could be a *very* expensive prop. as an avatar/actor in the future
