Wes Anderson wrote the screenplay for this kid's novel and, along with brilliant casting, turned out a film that can just barely call itself a "kid's movie". I think more adults were laughing than children and that just what I was hoping for since I noticed kids outnumbered adults 3 to 1.Mr. Fox (Clooney) was married (Streep) and finally got captured stealing squab from the local poultry farm. After managing to escape he turned over a new leaf and had a cub (Jason Schwartzman). Tired of feeling poor Fox wanted to move above ground and soon found a tree. After his lawyer (B. Murray) failed to talk him out of it Fox and family took up residence in a tree overlooking at three very large farms with the apple/alcoholic cider factory run by the always commendable Michael Gambon. Soon Fox's instincts get the best of him and he endeavors to pull off one last "big job" by robbing all three farms in his line of sight without Mrs. knowing.
This is a great marvel of production as the main characters having a seemingly claymation look with action integrated with SOTA animation and set to a hip well blended soundtrack. There are outright guffaws and tongue-in-cheek giggles all the way through as Fox schemes, plots, and pep talks his way through to the end.
This is a very entertaining movie with other notables not mentioned (Dafoe, eg.) and worth a visit to the cinema. Go late so there won't be as many kids. Most of it is over their heads anyway.

...saw it with the whole family and everyone loved it.
Very clever, well done and entertaining.
Can't think of a film I've enjoyed as much in a while.
Highly recommended.
I hope so.

to all the other Wes Anderson movies that you did not mention which are equally smug and "clever," like "Life Aquatic," for instance? I am with you on not being on the Wes Anderson bandwagon.
As I said below, in this instance Anderson's obsessions work much better in the animated form.
I really do think Mr. Fox is very good - it's actually *witty*, as opposed to merely quirky.
See the link to the review in my post...it's a rave from a critic who is not an Anderson fan.
Jason Schwartzman wa brilliant and has never shown such since.

Wes Anderson's (maybe) best movie.
It just happens that animation is the best way to tell the tale. Fantastic Mr Fox is definitely made for adults, although children can enjoy it. But they won't get at least 60% of the subleties. Like The Incresibles, it's a film for adults that children can enjoy rather than the reverse.
It's the best movie about family responsibilities and mid-life crises since...ummm...since The Incredibles :-)
Anderson's obsessions dovetail perfectly into the visual stule of the film and seem liberating instead of confusing or cloying. The stop motion animation is charmingly crafty and suits the sly Roald Dahl novel perfectly. I love the look of the creatures and the details of the Fox's (and other creatures') domestic lives - the props all have incredible texture, are clever as hell and wonderful to behold.
The music is apt and quite witty, including the strategic use of pop songs for many cues. The voice actors all turn in excellent performances, and the dynamism in dialogue is no doubt in large part because they were recorded as a group, like a radio show, instead of singly. I loved the way the script uses "cuss" in lieu of actual swear words (as in "what the *cuss* do you think you're doing?"). Clooney, Streep and Gambon are standouts in the voice acting department, but everyone is quite good.
It's been a good year for animation generally with Selick's wonderful Coraline, then Up, and now Fantastic Mr Fox. I missed Miyazaki's Ponyo
This could be the first year a Pixar film does not take home the Best Animated Film Oscar.
as director. When I arrived, I walked in and saw all the kids and thought I had made some terrible mistake. Apparently, moms and dads didn't research it either. You are right, it could be his best film because it follows a specific story and the film doesn't run unnecessarily long like most of Anderson's gems.
