director Karoly Makk, is a quiet, sensitive, and beautifully constructed paean to the greatest of human emotions.
An old woman, whose son has been arrested and sentenced by the secret police to 10 years for a non-specified "crime," is cared for by her daughter-in-law. This woman has kept the truth from the old woman, leading her to believe her son is a successful artist in America by sending letters she herself has written.
Seldom do we see the human, individual devastation wrought by totalitarian regimes. We read the number, 300,000 incarcerated and "disappeared" but we can't feel much emotionally--- the numbers are too overwhelming. The old woman and her daughter-in-law, through their obvious love and caring for one another, and their mutual grieving for the absent son and husband, have an impact upon the viewer far greater than might be apparent: now, we can see what this might be multiplied by thousands or millions.
A poetic, beautiful film which I strongly recommend.
and often find them hard to follow by the way the story is edited. I guess in their cultures in congruency is a way of life.

Where music is thematic. The North African Zar trance dance scene near
the end of "Exiles" is transcendental. The women's flamenco singing in
"Vengo" is expository, whether you understand the words or not. "Latcho
Drom" and "Gadjo Dilo"? Music as the bones, sinew, and tendons of
existence itself. Thus, few directors make films as engrossing and as
engulfing as Gatlif. Regards,

I consider Gatlif an Eastern European director, even though he's French/
Algerian. I'm fast and loose that way. Have you seen those films I
mention? Regards,

Poland; Hungary; former E. German Republic.

Now, how many S. American films have you seen? Mexican?
I don't think cultural relativism is your forté!
Conjugal Life.
Not too much to write home about it... the director is considered in his country a star, and that very well may be in relative terms. Which doesn't say much.
