Whatever possessed Kubrick to cast O'neal? Did he owe sumbuddy lots of money? He was OK in Paper Moon and What's Up Doc, but good Lord, Kubrick was at the peak of his career and he casts the relative non talent and non charismatic O'Neal as the male lead in a 3+ hour drama?

He, not unlike Bresson, sometimes just wanted a certain face and a personality he could absolutely direct to do his bidding.
When I heard about that casting I immediately hoped that would be another Redmond... but first minutes into that opus shattered all my dreams.

n that space epic, acting was less important than in a period drama like BL, hence Dullea's woodeness was less of a distraction than R O's.
I've only seen BL once, on its release, now after all this praise I'm gonna have to sit thru the damn thing again :)
