Starring the always interesting Joachim Phoenix with lots of stars in cameos sprinkled about.
Like "The Big Sleep" and "The Long Goodbye," both superb films, this is a complex, almost-impossible-to-follow story of a private dick's girlfriend-in-trouble-and-needs-his-help film.
These kinds of films rise or fall on style: this one has enough. Not a great film, but very entertaining. Worth a BIG bucket and soda.
Yep, this one is on my list to see!
A fine return for PTA?
I get short tempered and start to doze when a film egregiously pursues instant "cult status". The writer/director were shooting to be the next Lebowski but only succeeded in boring me to death with endless characters and endless plots of which almost none of them came together. I was on the verge of leaving until the VERY provocative seduction scene popped up between Waterston and Phoenix. After that I felt more forgiving of all the trash that went before.
I'm tired of looking at Phoenix and wish he would take off several years to contemplate his navel in the South Pacific. Brolin was pretty good as "Big Foot" and a lot of the dialog qualified as "pithy". I'm not sure I would recommend this one to my mother because of the inherent sleaziness of it all. I felt like taking a shower after getting home. I will not see it again to give it a second chance, no sir, not at 2 hours and 20 minutes. Wow, how did they tie me up for so long? Without Waterson's lithe nubile personage I would have ditched long before the ending credits.
Count me out for instant classics.
