We open is a small, dark "European" town where a strange illness has fallen upon half its inhabitants. Two sisters, Aiya and Mirra, have tended her mother until she dies. Then Mirra becomes bedridden and worsens by the day. Aiya desperately reaches out to the local priest for help. Father Herman accepts them into his quarters where Aiya finds a book unlike the rest of his religious writings. It is a ritual that will allow a person to enter the mind of sick to find out what the real problem is.
Now, we journey through imagery and atmospheres that aren't necessarily horrific as unsettling. Very atmospheric.
The main characters are played by two very pretty Russian girls who do an outstanding job. The art direction is near Medival and the cinematography and post-production create a very surreal backdrop. Filmed in both Russia (Novgorod) and Germany (Hessen) the film overwhelms with darkness and antiquity.
Not your average popcorn flick. No screaming teens nor chainsaws. If you have just taken a hand full of reds best not to watch this.
At one hour and twenty minutes it was exactly one hour and twenty minutes too long.

search "Russian driving" on YouTube and enjoy the most bizzare sights in the world.
This is a mild one but you get the gist:
Russians, despite their birthplace, do not believe in "black ice".
Russians firmly believe in being "dead right" no matter the circumstances.
Every other driver in Russia is loaded to the gills.
I watch these shaking my head the whole time.

Now you know why every car in Russia has dash cam.Part of the impact was lost on you due to the language barriers - the yells and screams behind the camera are just wonderful. :)
Of particular interest are the pedestrians crossing traffic. It takes special kind of nerves to do it.

of traffic signs on corners of even large busy intersections. And what blows my mind in the insane insistence of being "dead right". Always jaw-dropping.
Auto insurance must be unaffordable.
I liked it. The nightmarish, dreamlike states during the "mind melds" reminded me a bit of David Lynch's efforts along these lines too. The ending was slightly weak (it's as if weak endings are unavoidable in movies these days!), but certainly not as weak as some I've seen. I thought some of the cinematography was beautiful too. And, as you imply, it's so nice to find a film these days with surreal/horror elements, but without any dumb screaming teens or chainsaws! Thanks for the heads up!
(BTW, I thought Aiya was more of a babe than Mirra!)
Many surrealists are simply people who could not make it in other fields. Be it paintings or movies - same difference.
For instance, when the shackles were taken off the Soviet art in the late eighties, everyone and his brother in law started doing "surrealist" paintings. They were far easier to paint and much easier to sell.
So any time I hear that word I cringe and run for cover. In 9,78 cases out of 10 it is just the cover for trash.
And Lynch? Bleah! Hardly a good recommendation.

Russian surrealism run amok. I don't watch Russian crap everyday because it isn't available. Plus, I won't be ordering the disk. It was a one-time fling with Aiya and Mirra.

I think you simply MUST order the disk, and not just one, but at least two, send one to Patrick, he is still recovering from the pepper vodka I brought him. :)

They have the special term for the stuff like this in Russian: tschernukha. Meaning: "dark bullshit".
I have not yet see that marvel, but based on what I read it fully deserves its one star Netflix rating.

Then give us your exuberant disdain.
Face it - most of their modern day movies are crap. And yet most of them get - at the VERY minimum - some "Special Recognition" at Cannes or Sundance.

So sick of these movies that are engineered by Hollywood to be world-pleasers...Marvel and the lot, enough already. Artless schlock.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of alternatives to Hollywood and the "Russian surrealism".

Willy Wonka had, unusually (for him) pretty weak review ...it's a nail-biter, and you will appreciate it since you watched and liked Narcos.
I don't trust Netflix ratings and I sure don't trust the RT's either anymore...
