This soapy 12-part series starts out just as WW1 is beginning. Two upper-middle-class sisters in St. Petersburg were enjoying life with one disgusted with her schlub, moneyed husband and the other ready for law school at the university.
The war happens, love happens, separations happen, despair happens, and the Russian Revolutions tears everything apart. This series is interesting because if Russia were still commie this thing wouldn't have been written. All the Bolsheviks are represented as the worst Russian Rednecks who grab and steal everything they can in the name of equality. The sisters do their best to keep their heads low despite their "noble" leanings. One husband fights White while the other Red. The most incredible things happen as if Spielberg were there tugging on the audience's heartstrings.
Vicious, senseless slaughter by the Bolsheviks frame the story and gives one an inkling that 1917 was as messy as 1789. I marveled at the rough times for everyone knowing that a young, vital Victor managed to survive the daily debacle of changing political tides. (White or Red?)
The sisters were pretty enough and the acting was serviceable. I mean, they're Russians so how am I to judge the acting?
3 wonks for being big, having a good principle cast, illustrating history with a broad brush
2 wanks for tugging emotions and being incredulous at times

(Don't bother VK, it will bring up old memories.)
But it is trash. This is the third take on a movie based on a rather famous literary work by A. N. Tolstoy... of these three the first one was memorable and good, the second one I did not see, and the last one I wish I didn't see.
Did you really sit through it all? I think we bailed out during the second episode. My wife jumped first, and with no parachute. :)
If you really want to see what the better Russian directors were able to do during the soviet days, try to locate this:

It is a true cult series, and notice its high imdb rating: 9.0. Well deserved, without any doubt. Long stream of 10 out of 10 ratings, with one viewer summing it up aptly:
"This is a jewel of spy cinema"

That movie was a hit in a Soviet block. Streets were emptying when they played the episodes (black & white TV's mostly) and what a beautiful title. Can't imagine anybody from my generation not knowing that series, even though we generally hated Russians and continue to do so... he he
...how its director Tatyana Lioznova managed to put together such a successful package, considering all the limitations of the police state.
The film is universally loved by all... by the most hardened communists just as much as by the regime haters and its victims.
