There's a reason Toshiba is having these promotions: sales slump.
Bigtime.

Sony has also had their own sales promotions. Both sides have been gearing up for the holiday shopping seasons. I'll believe HD DVD prospects are bad when I start seeing hard sales numbers suggesting such.
Yeah, they're bad...as opposed to good. I don't see how they could be described as anything but very bad.
Blu-ray standalone player sales are bad too, except for the PS3 which is kicking butt in comparison. We can get into the whole debate of what percentage of PS3s will be used for movies later, but since the PS3 hard drive and games are blu-ray, it seems fair to call it a blu-ray player.

Warner is hinting at picking sides based on comparative hardware sales during this Holiday season. So even if both formats' hardware sales are abysmally bad for the year, they could try to force the issue one way or the other based on who comes out ahead in the numbers game.
the other player is Best Buy, they could simply stop stocking HD DVD and/or Blu ray based on lousy sales figures for the Holiday season. E.g. even if Warner's stays neutral, BB could say they are only stocking one hi-def format (Blu-ray or HD DVD) from Warner's from now on because of this dual inventory BS.
I'm sure there is more recent article. You have access to google, same as I do.
I don't get into all the hypotheticals. Blu-ray is selling better than HD DVD. It's a better format if only by virtue of its higher capacity. Can't deny that.

Nobody is buying either players.
BTW, I was just informed my 5 free BDs won't ship until November 4. I sent the forms in first week of July-I'm underwhelmed.
