You might wish to consider the Panasonic. The S-500 may be a better player than the S1 (guessing-won't know until it comes out). What are you looking for in a BD Player? How important is advanced audio codecs to you? Upscaled DVD? Analog out? Lots of options.

I actually had been considering the soon-to-be released BDP-S500, which would be $700, so I guess that would be my limit. I'm looking for the best video performance, both with BDs and upscaling of DVDs. Whether the player can handle advanced audio codecs is secondary. (I can't do MCH, so I'll be running audio out of the player's 2-channel analog outputs, which would be a fold-down of the MCH tracks as I understand it.)
What I was trying to get at was whether the BDP-S1 would now be considered a bargain at its new price point and if it would offer at least as good video performance at anything near that price.
Thanks,
Russell
Not lots on the new Sony yet and I'm not sure when it will be available. Best Buy has a 30 day return policy. Comparing would me my recommendation.
It isn't always the matter of which player is best but which is more reliable.

PS3 which basically has been problem free. One needs to keep up with firmware upgrades. I tried a Samsung BDP 1200 for $399 initially but that was a no go. It locked up and also needed firmware upgrades right off the bat to play BDs that the PS3 was having no problem with.
I'm a very happy camper to this point. I'm not buying lots of titles though. I rent from Netflix (little to no wait) and my local Blockbuster store has 200 BD titles! I would not have bought in if titles were not that readily available to me.
I really hadn't considered using a PS3 as a BD player since I don't do video games, but, from what I've read, it seems that it's the most problem-free (or issue-free) player out there. I know absolutely nothing about video game units, so bear with me here. Does it function like a 'regular' player in all respects? How's the upscaling of standard DVDs? How's the loading speed? Does it have an HDMI output? Does it have 2-channel analog outputs?
Thanks again,
Russell
I found (just about) all the info I needed in a review of the PS3 on the web page below. However, if you (or others) would like to comment on using the PS3 as a BD player, please let me know. (I'm still not sure I'd want a gaming console for a BD player, though...)

Its $500 list, cheaper on line.
