I suppose this is Toshiba's last, and probably hopeless last maneuver in a lost war. Perhaps enough cheap movies would become available, but for me, there is, so far, less than ten titles in both formats combined that I really want.
Perhaps someone will get lucky as those who bought RCA's competitor to LaserDiscs. RCA had a video disc that was read by a stylus playing in a shallow groove (the signal was the difference in capacitance caused by varying depth of pits in the groove). It worked well, but lost to the LaserDisc (itself, ultimately a loser). But, as a good faith gesture to those who bought the machines, RCA offered $500 to buy back the machines. That was a fantastic bargain for those who bought the machines for a lot less. At a show, I saw boxes and boxes of machines going for $50 (and no takers) before RCA made the offer.
I wouldn't recommend investing any money in HD DVD if you haven't already done so already. I do agree there should be some killer deals on HD DVD coming up within days?/weeks?/months? so some folks might be willing to play. If I can pick up an HD-XA2 cheap (re: 5.1 TrueHD w/analog outputs + killer DVD upscaler) or HD DVD movies for less than $10, I might go for it. OTOH, hardcore HD DVD fans or uninformed consumer looking for a deal will probably beat me to it.
I think that investing in an HD-DVD player may keep the format alive awhile longer and that's GOOD, in my humble opinion.

I doubt that very many consumers are uninformed about Blu-ray fans doing an end-zone dance while armchair referees take another look at Warner's gambit, but certainly those of us who already own HD-DVD players will likely jump at the opportunity of purchasing a back-up player if the price is right.

Toshiba's new strategy is to stress how great regular DVDs look when upscaled with one of these players--which pretty much says it all I think.
