I have the first Oppo dvd player and love it. It is 420p just like my TV and I was genuinely surprised to find the Faroudja chip actually worked. Really helps with the old TV shows that make up the bulk of my entertainment.
But.. Oppo is working on Blu-ray and it should be a dandy little toy. Would
there be any point to getting one with my 420p TV. Seems doubtful, but I have heard comments to the contrary.
I'm very happy with my (now 7 year old) 480p panny plasma 42".
It all has to do with viewing distance...
I'm seated about 12 feet away and it (still) looks fabulous.
yes you can see the dots up close -- who watches tv like that ?
I'm using a Sony SAT HD300 (directv) as source.
{the Directv hardware is crap -- you can get a Sony sat receiver on ebay for $40 ( mfg. list $800+)}
1080p is marketing hype -- you don't need that kind of resolution for screens under 65"... most folk ... the kind of crap they watch (like Battlestar Gigantica -- the show was shot on pro video tape -- not film like 60's era Star Trek) looks worse when up-converted to hi-res. ... you can see all the noise from the video tape !
I just browsed over the manual so you might be in luck. Just make sure the Blu-ray player is set to 1080i though the HDMI/DVI handshaking might automatically be set to 1080i. You will need an HDMI to DVI adapter and you will have to use coax/optical/analog to get the audio out.
The last build on this model was Jan '06 which looks like it was the Mitsu model available at the time you bought it.
...most BDs will look better - especially from filmsourced material. The Oppos does an excellent job of upscaling but HD is better, even at 720p.
How big is your set?
If it really is 720, there is no doubt he would benefit from a Blu-ray player.
-------------Call it, friendo.

Your Mits IS 720p. Not the highest resolution currently available but definfitely HD compatible and much better PQ than 480p.
Personally, I would wait for BD players a bit as better players will be coming down the pike very soon now that the format war is over. But you can enjoy a version of HD now if you so choose with either cable, sat or over the air.
.
Cable can't compete with Satellite for HD broadcasts.
.
You know, HD broadcasts won't make a difference for you either. Might be time for you to get another new TV.

while the colors will be (or should be) better on BD Vs, a regular DVD, you wn't see any difference in resolution. The act of downscaling the disc may actually do damage,if your set is actually 480.
Jack
that I will be replacing it in 2 or 4 years.
I have to tell ya, it's not by today's standards a hot shot TV. But it suits me very well except for occasional color inaccuracy and an occasional lag in the picture.
Changing the bulb on my SXRD *shouldn't* be a big deal ( haven't done it yet), and the bulb was $250. Its been 2+ years (~5K hrs) for my set and I'm still on the original bulb. I have a back-up, but when that goes, I'll just replace the whole set. Plasma is just starting to catch up now,so they should be reasonable in a few years.

Remove the cover, loosen the bolts, slide out the lamp assembly, slide in the new lamp, tighten the bolts and replace the cover. Took 5 minutes, tops.

SDTV =480i interlaced old style TV set
Progressive scan Standard DVD 480p

Every HD disc I've seen (and I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players) has shown a definite improvement, often dramatic, over its 480p counterpart. Upconverting is great, but it will only take you so far. However, shot on video crap will always look like shot on video crap-you can't polish a turd. The results with film are often breathtaking, though-watching the HD-DVD of Casablanca was an amazing experience. I noticed details I hadn't seen before, and I've probably watched Casablanca at least a dozen times.

Read the official Mitsubishi sales brochure as the pdf link below.
1280 x 768 resolution is definitely 720p
Brochure says its 720p
You cant call something HD if its ED
480p (EDTV) is 850 x 480 resolution or approximately that.
.
like every other HD ready TV from that period.
Not to worry. Those are $89
or rent one from the cable or dish company.
Your TV set is fine--very good in fact.
.
Nope just plug the blu ray into a set of the component video inputs.
