"(a) whether I will get good results by integrating a Blu-Ray player using an HDMI-DVI cable;"
If, and only if, your Hitachi has HDCP on the DVI input.
"(b) how should I connect the new Blu Ray player such that the video signal goes directly to the TV via the HDMI-DVI cable, while the audio signal goes to my AV receiver?"
Set the BRDP to send audio out via digital (coax or TOSlink) or via analog, depending on what your AV receiver can handle.

First, I can't believe that you replied to my post! I've followed your Stereophile reviews for years and greatly admire your work. The fact that you're so helpful on a "retail" basis, has propelled you into sainthood. Wow.
Second, I will check the literature on my Hitachi RPTV, but is it likely that a 3 year old set would be HDCP compliant?
Third, if it doesn't support HDCP, then am I confined to connecting a Blu-Ray player to the TV with component cables and, if so, will this negate or reduce the improvement I'd otherwise expect to see from a Blu-Ray source?
Finally thanks for your patience with all these questions.

buy an adapter as DVI is not used on any of the newer sets.
At least that way your cable will be transferable to a newer design.

I know nothing about your Hitachi but the info should be in the user's manual. Using component video should be fine. Just more wire.
