Just bought a second BDP-S300 player for a second system. My first unit is great, nice resolution and fantastic upconverting with sound extended at the frequency ranges. The second unit has mediocre upconverting with slight flickering but incredible deep color - almost too much color! - that is still well balanced in the fleshtones. Treble is not well extended and bass is much deeper and tighter than the first unit. Both were new "A" stock bought from local dealer with latest firmware. Even my wife immediately noted the difference. Is this normal or did I get a dud unit?
Three BDP-S300s are installed in various locations in my home and all show equivalent performance. Before returning the second player, confirm that the settings are all correct on both the Sony and the display and try both on the same display to insure that a real difference exists. Good luck!
...quality control costs money. Try an exchange for another from different batch (date of manufacture or serial #).
In electronics, I usually see one in five as being satisfactory. Often early runs can be the best for a line, or hit or miss if manufacturing has to iron things out - depends on luck more than any would like to admit.
Sony has held up in the past, perhaps they're slipping.
Don't know if your units were made in different countries, but I wonder whether that would account for any differences in audio/video performance.
