Hi folks. My ultra-cheap DVD player died. I paid $39, it lasted 2 years. Not bad. But now I need a new one.
I respect people who care about video quality. I'm looking for only "OK". I was quite happy with my $39 player. I don't even remember the brand.
EXCEPT I wasn't happy with the horrible remote, and the fact that the codes it used were non-standard, so I had to use the horrible, cheap-*ssed remote. So I DO care about finding a player that will let me use a better remote than the remote that came with my cable box (which isn't terrible).
Let's say, under $100. Under $50 is better, but under $100 will do.
Recommendations?
Thanks,
Jim
I saw one used a while back for $55. They're supposed to be excellent at upconverting DVDs. Also, HD-DVD movies can be found for $3 to $7, which is slightly cheaper than Blu-ray.
at BB or Target or Wallyworld work as good as any and it has the cachet of being a Sony.
My $50 Sony is about 2 years old and works great as a transport playing music DVD's, DAD's and HDAD's into my dac. Can't comment on PQ as I do not use it for that.

I bought it used from ebay.plays dvd audios too.$80.00 new ive played at least a 1000 disc on it.plays everything.they made the s-97 too.
I just happened to notice this really slim DVD player from Sony at Best Buy yesterday and was amazed at its price. Progressive scan, too. Don't know anything about its performance, though.

I paid $900 for my first DVD player, a Sony DVP300 or something. It was one of the first, yes... But how does ANYBODY make money on a product with that much involved that sells for $40?
-Manufacturing costs including packaging (!)
-Shipping costs
-Distribution
-Advertising
-Store and salesman cut
HUH? I'm sure they're hoping the same guy buys a $1000 LCD, but still...

well they are made by robots or labor making a $1 a day but how can you package the thing and ship it overseas and truck it to distribution point, break the shipment down and reship to BB's everywhere and let them make a profit.
