Hello,
My 11 year old Sony VCR (SLV-778HF) died a few days ago - the motor seized up and will not advance, fast forward or rewind a tape. Is it worth getting repaired or do you think the cost would come close to the price of a new one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
best regards,
Rich S.

They play VCR and DVD. This might be a way to go if you have a large collection of Tapes that you want to watch.
many cheap quality VCR's there. Some of them still work.
Not to mention garage sales for a song. You could probably buy 3 or 4 of a newer vintage for the price of a $40-$80 repair. Whatever yer choice best of luck.
I heard they made one.

I am still watching DVDs with a Sony 5-disc changer on an ancient Sears LXI TV. I would love to get my feet wet in the good video pool but don't have the $$$ to try out some options.

.
I am probably going to take it in sometime within the next two weeks - there is one place in Philly which gets good reviews for electronics, I think it is called ServiceStar on 22nd or 23rd. Hopefully it is a cheap fix, I have a tight budget and have grown attached to it...as silly as it sounds.

Nowadays it's usually cheaper to just buy a new VCR than it would be to pay a repairman to fix an old one.
The capstan motor on those units have been known to seize up and cause the problem that you describe. Any reputable service shop that repairs Sony should be able to overhaul the motor for you at a reasonable rate. It is highly unlikely that the motor requires replacing.
Hi Bob, thanks for the info.

I have a similar vintage VCR, I think an SLV-980HF (?), in our bedroom. We still use it to time shift for some programs, but if it were to bite the dust, another DVD recorder would make it's way into our house. It IS 11 years old after all, and VCR's have TONS of moving parts; it's just not worth repairing IMO.
If you have tapes you can't/won't replace with DVD, either have them converted to DVD or buy a new VCR. In general I've always found Sony to make good quality units, so another Sony VCR may be in order if you must.

It is, if you have a large tape collection, or if you have movies on tape that never made it to DVD.

That VCR would be a good start in a collection of electronics relics; kids will be walking by in wide-eyed amazement! :o)

Yeah, I would at least look into it. Sony service may have the parts to facilitate the repair. There are plenty of video repair guys (depending on where you live) to look it over. IMHO, the older players were made better, so I think the repair might make sense. Maybe, maybe not. The link will lead you to a Sony email support center.
