I have an HTPC that I'm using to run HDMI to my TV. TV has only a Toslink/Optical audio output - no analog audio output.
I have a great analog audio system. How do I get the audio out of the HDMI? If I run audio straight from the PC, I get no audio from the TV, and I want audio on the TV for the "center" channel.
Gefen GTV-HDMI-2-HDMIAUD:
http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=9164Although, I don't know what this means (from the manual):
"It only supports Hi Res Audio via HDMI. It does not decode Hi Res Audio."
I can get audio and video just fine from pc to tv. But if I try to use both HDMI and the pc analog outputs at the same time, Windows shuts off the HDMI audio - it's like plugging headphones into an amplifier that automatically shuts off the speakers.
The tv has no analog outputs, and the preamp has no digital inputs, so connecting them is out of the question without some type of converter between them. And since I can't get both HDMI audio and analog audio out of the pc -simultaneously- it looks like I need to convert the HDMI audio to analog with some type of converter.

Use the multichannel analog output from the soundcard to feed an analog signal to your analog gear. But as Kal said, televisions usually do not provide high quality sound due to their cheap built-in speakers.

I dont think the htpc has hdmi or it would work. it probably has the other conections that have no audio. I have a tv with a computer input or I can use the converter cables for hdmi. either way theres no sound. I have to hook up rca to the tv for sound. If you have rca on your tv try that,if it dont work use your amp. I own a htpc too so yours should work.ps my htpc has a small stereo pin jack that has the converter rca cord for the sound.

The problem is the PC and finding a way to send audio out over more than one port. Besides, the speakers built into TVs are notoriously awful.
