Hi there
Why substitute CRT with "direct view"? After all, plasma panels are also "direct view". LCD can be "direct view" and front or rear projected just like CRTs.
CRTs have an advantage over other display technologies in the color department because the video color standard is largely based on the phosphors used in CRTs. LCDs are handicapped because the bulbs and LEDs do not output a full-spectrum white light to produce the exact red, green and blue wavelengths after filtering.
If you want a big image using CRTs, then consider front projectors. Used professional-grade projectors capable of 1080p are pennies on the (original cost) dollar. NEC projectors are often credited with having the best color and fleshtones, mostly due to the use of Delta HD-145 color-filtered lenses. So retro-fitting HD-145 lenses to other PJs (e.g. Electrohome Marquees) is a popular upgrade.

A properly calibrated Direct View TV or monitor, provided it's a quality set, will give the truest colors. However, where are you going to get one of decent size (minimum 32" for a small room) and quality brand new ? You may be "a color man", but there's a lot more to video than color. Direct View sets have numerous issues that sideline any small advantage they have in color accuracy.
Next stop, plasma.
> However, where are you going to get one of decent size (minimum 32" for a small room) and quality brand new?"Brand new" is not a requirement that everybody applies to every purchase.
Some of us benefit from the "newer is better" attitude. I've obtained for friends two 34" CRT HDTVs that were being given away for free.

To me, it's not worth it vs a larger plasma display and the advantages of that technology. I have given away several Direct View televisions and have not regretted it one bit.
