In the spring of 1962, Marilyn Monroe began work on what would be her last appearance on film... George Cukor's Something's Got To Give co-starring her friend Dean Martin. The film experienced many delays as Monroe famously called in sick numerous times over several months including once when she flew to NYC to sing Happy Birthday for JFK. Consequently the studio reached their tipping point and fired Monroe. Monroe who was the most famous sex symbol in films threatened to sue the studio, and was ultimately reinstated with a new contract to boot! Monroe was excited to return to work but famously succumbed to an overdose of barbiturates. Cukor tried in vain to recast the film, but Dean Martin refused to continue without Monroe. The project was ultimately shelved until a couple years later when it was revived as Move Over Darling with Doris Day and James Garner. The completed footage of Monroe's film sat on the shelves at 20th Century Fox for years until archivists resurrected it into a short film of completed scenes. What the completed scenes show is at 36 years of age just how beautiful Monroe was and she never lost that unexplainable quality that she exuded on screen. It of course features Monroe's famous nude pool scene which was the first of its kind. SO sad that she was lost at such a young age....

What exactly is that unexplained quality? The blonde hair is common as is red lips and long eyelashes. Innocent eyes and expression? Jayne Mansfield has these but not the mysterious qualities. There have been several deep studies but no final conclusions. And when she sings happy birthday, it is earth shaking!

BTW, did Doris Day act the Pool scene? I havent seen the new version.

Here is the trailer for the film though... Typical Doris Day film. As far as Jayne Mansfield goes, she is the cheap imitation of MM....MM had a mediocre singing voice at best, but it is hard to deny that she exuded sexuality on screen. At least as far as I am concerned. She is STILL regarded as one of the top 10 most beautiful women to ever be on film. Personally, I would put her #2 right behind Vivien Leigh and before Elizabeth Taylor....

Same platinum white blonde hair, same figure.

MM was an underrated actress, as the footage shows. Had she completed the movie, it would have been a hit, and the pool scene would have been iconic. Who knows- maybe it would have led to a career renaissance. MM could have become a sexier Doris Day...less talk and more pillow.

In retrospect she died at the right time. She was beautiful and looked 10yrs younger than her age, but Hollywood was changing and by 66-67, at age 40, she would have been left behind. Or probably in Europe, doing a series of Eurospy movie or Spaghetti Westerns.
