story of a nuclear scientist who braves exposure to radiation to further critical research. Smoktunovsky and Batalov in the same film? Yes, a brilliant collaboration of two of filmdom's greatest actors. The female lead, Tatyana Lavrova matches them, but decided to pursue a theater career with only (damn!) occasional films. Mikael Romm directs this analysis of scientific motivation--- but it would all fall apart without the arresting story of two men pursuing the same woman--- and the affect their devotion has upon her.

Streaming on the Criterion Channel.

I have a really soft spot for that film, having seen it when it first came out. Lavrova, caught between the two ultra smart men was incredibly touching and funny. Not to mention her cooking. :) At twelve, I was madly in love with her. :)

Kudos to Criterion for bringing in such diverse gems.

MUBI had some other Romm films, but not now. I want to see that Germany, posted on December 29, 2020 at 13:06:36

I get skeptical when one fascist regime does "analysis" of the other one.

ALL soviet anti-nazi propaganda is too heavily tainted, so screw them all.

You mean they make the Nazis look too mean? :-) nt, posted on December 30, 2020 at 06:18:46

Not even the Nazi.

For a good example read on Katyn.

Only in 1990 they finally admitted, under pressure, that it was the deed of their dreaded NKVD.

The two murderers really tried to outdo each other.

Mongols, French, Polish, "The Intervention," the Nazis... At some point, maybe a buffer is considered a wise protective measure?

She slaughtered her own children left and right. That "mother" has insatiable appetite for blood.

You are parroting one of their most disingenuous excuses - as invaders they took the second seat to no one. Just ask people of Poland, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Georgia...

You seem to be playing that "Good murderer - Bad murderer" mind bender.

In reality a murderer is a murderer.

You know, Victor, this country has a lot of "murderous" behavior, too. Lots of it, posted on December 31, 2020 at 12:59:38

happened in other countries; it wasn't just slavery or indigenous slaughter. Imperialism is another blood-thirsty Mama...
