First, not a Phoenix fanboy. Secondly, Ridley fanboy. Thirdly, they both let me down.

This film is primarily about how uncouth and downright crazy Napolean was (supposedly). So, much of the time was spent on Phoenix raging and brooding over Josephine. Ridley employed his action skills with the few battle segments there were. Waterloo was the longest (as should be) but was not the masterpiece of Bondarchuk's 'Waterloo'.

So, we have the seaminess of Napolean and Josephine against the craziness of The Reign of Terror with the treachery of Napolean's brother pulling him up whenever he could. I suppose this is the "most inside" look at Napolean's life via motion picture and should be seen on that alone.

He's seen as just another crazy fook in Euro history (so many to choose from), and banished to some inner chapters of French history books.
If this movie shows anything about the man and his life, then maybe worth a see.

This was useful in seeing who he really may have been. But, it could have been a tad less clumsy.

IIRC, this guy is Russian, but he has a Ukrainian wife. He's been doing a lot of analysis of the Ukrainian conflict over the last year and a half, so he comes at the subject from a military strategy perspective.

Anyway, here's his own summary:
Hollywood Strikes Again. . . as they demolish the almost mythical figure of Napoleon. Apart from multiple historical inaccuracies, the story itself is not even interesting, and the time jumps ruin everything.

I an not a Phoenix fan either but do like Mr. Scott's films and I thought the trailer looked good! I probably will still see it though... I hope Wonka turns out to be good! Again the trailer looks fun. As well as Maestro! Bernstein was a musical hero of mine....

Big budget, big stars, cast of thousands, historically accurate - yet this 1970 film only got yawns and brickbats from most critics. Meanwhile, the public, as indicated on Rotten Tomatoes, gave it an 83% favorable rating. For some reason, the film was much more popular in England than it was in France. ;-)

I haven't seen it, but was wondering if anyone here has.

Read David Chandler's The Campaigns of Napoleon which gives a good deal of non-military background to the Emperor's reign. Very readable too.

But seriously, Hollywood makes nothing but crap these days.

Yeah, it was short for what the topic was.

Is it ultimately inaccurate? I don't know.

Yeah, the story was converted into a love story, but how do you get your significant other to join you at the viewing otherwise?
