of Star Wars! We saw the ad in the LA Times that simply said "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away".... It was an amazing night! By the end of the film, people were jumping up and down on their seats! I saw Sound Of Music in the same theater that sneak previewed Gone With The Wind many years before....

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
The Sting
2001
Planet of The Apes
Alien
Kelly's Heros
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Caddyshack
Animal House

One night in 1968 my Mom told me and my sisters to go to bed, so I washed up and hit the sack.

A bit later my Dad came into my room, tapped me on the shoulder and said "Get dressed and meet me in the garage. Be quiet".

When we pulled up to the theater and I saw "Planet of the Apes" on the marquis, I was all smiles.

I was 9. I'll never forget that night. Dad at his coolest.

I saw it first run at The Castro Theatre where I've probably seen more films
than at any other theatre, mostly classics or restored films, some first run.

It was a matinee, not as thrilling as your experience.

About 1975 saw ALL the Ape movies up to that time
at a second run movie theatre (SF was rich with them
in the 70's-80's) - over 10 hours of Apes!

Raiders & The Sting would make my Top 20.

I saw all those on first release as well with the exception of The Kids Are Alright, which to this day I've failed to see. Guess that needs remedying

The first film to totally blow me away was "Robinson Caruso on Mars" I was eight.

It's a Mad Mad Mad World

Mary Poppins (so so)

My first disappointment was 2001 I was twelve.

Next great film my Dad took me and my boyhood friend to see "On Any Sunday" which did lead to dirtbike ownership for both of us.

The Godfather

Pulp Fiction

Casino

Good Fellas

The King's Speech

Not all absolute classics I know.

Maybe 100 people there.

When it was over, went to the dive bar next
door, had a couple drinks and went back to
The Warfield for the next screening.

Even less folk there, even better the second time.

Not sure how it's aged, but if you're a fan you need to see it.

I was working out of town. A couple co-workers and I went to see Pulp Fiction and it was mind-blowing, not like anything else, convoluted, wild, funny, and without a dull moment. A few weeks later, I saw it again in a theater...not many movies got 2nd viewings. I've seen most of Tarantino's movies since then, some great, some not so great, but nothing hit like that first encounter.

Wait Until Dark....great, but very tense, movie. We showed up early as we heard it got really crowded. We got there while the previous showing was still playing. There were dozens of us waiting in the lobby. They would allow no one to enter until the show ended and seats were empty. It was apparently packed. While we were waiting all of a sudden there was a huge combined audience scream from the theater. We all stopped talking and just stared at each other. WTF?

Let's just say the group waiting outside for the next showing after ours heard an identical crowd scream from us.

I had seen, up til then, dozens of really tense scary movies (ie Psycho) and had never audibly reacted to a scene...until that day.

Cuckoo's Nest
Alien
Aliens
Star Wars - first film
Wild Bunch
Godfather - all 3 of them, actually
Song of the South - Disney will never re-release this, you should try to see it anyway you can

Khartoum as a young kid
Alien scared the piss out of me and I jumped out of my seat
Star Wars 1st
One Flew
Vanishing Point
The Seven Ups
...and Rocky - very inspirational

these were when I was a teen and in theatres like the good ole' days. The sound was Altec's and tubes, and seated at least 500 in a huge hall

In the early eighties my son wanted me to take him to a scary movie called The Car which was about a ghost Car chasing other cars. My son was twelve but my two daughters wouldn't be allowed to go by my wife. On the last day of show for the last show I managed to take the son. But alas tickets were sold out. Seeing the sad face of the son the Manager of the theater brought two chairs and let us in. Even now after so many years my daughters have not forgiven me for being partial to the boy.I feel pretty bad about it too.
