'The Empty Man': Not a teen creature feature . . .

This film starts with two American couples hiking in Bhutan when an accident occurs and changes everything. This opening sequence is lengthy but sets the mysterious tone of the film. Then we transition to the present time where James Badge Dale becomes the protagonist. He's an ex-St. Louis cop who has a tenuous relationship with his neighbor and her daughter. When the daughter disappears Badge begins a quest to find her and unravel the circumstances. (You may have seen this plot before if you substitute Badge for Mickey.)

The film's lighting starts on a bright note but gets darker and darker as the story continues. (Noorish.) This is well done but the storyline (a graphic novel) may not up to highbrow pretensions.
