Would Cameron be around today if the Japanese had gotten their bomb working?
They were certainly interested.
" Japan's Atomic Efforts
Limited Progress:
By early 1945, a small group of Japanese scientists at the RIKEN complex had managed to produce a small amount of material, but it was not uranium-235, the key isotope for an atomic bomb.
RIKEN Facility Destroyed:
The facility where these experiments were conducted was destroyed by a U.S. firebombing raid on Tokyo in March 1945, ending the separator project.
Resource Scarcity:
The program was severely hampered by a lack of resources, including the unavailability of heavy water, a crucial component for nuclear reactors.
Material Procurement:
Japan attempted to find uranium ore in locations ranging from Fukushima Prefecture to Korea, China, and Burma and requested uranium from Germany. A shipment of unprocessed uranium oxide was sent from Germany but was captured by the U.S. forces."
