Opie brings us a very grown-up film about people escaping post-WW1 Germany to build quiet, self-fulfilling lives.
Dr. Ritter, a physician turned philosopher, came to Floreana Island of the Galapagos with his wife to be the only settlers. Their pursuit of solitude was rudely interrupted by the appearance of the Wittmers, who had been seduced by Ritter's letters published in German newspapers and magazines. If that wasn't a large enough distraction, the "Baroness" and her crew arrived to survey the island for a luxury hotel catering only to millionaires.
The trickery and complications each faction foists on the other both amuses and complicates the story. Each group's contention against the other finally comes to a head and ends unsurprisingly badly.
The actual video footage of the real settlers shown during the credits brings this all into focus. Most of this actually happened. Thanks to Howard for getting hold of this story and bringing it to "life".
The cast was well suited and the script advanced the story at a good pace. You never wonder if you left the sink running or the car unlocked.
Worth a see.
