Adua e le compagne... so sad

The 1960 film by Antonio Pietrangeli is a sad story of four former Italian prostitutes trying to start new life on their own.

They cling to their leader Adua, played by the already aging Simone Signoret, in their last hope of normal human future, love and dignity.

But this is 1960, and the bitter mood of Bicycle Thief is still with us, so you feel the sense of doom right away, and of course, you are right.

The film holds very few surprises, and lacks depth, but it still gives you another chance to see several good actors in action, and even a rarer chance to see another work by the director, who is largely unknown in the US. Perhaps his best known work is "I Knew Her Well"... and how many people here have seen it?
