201 A Space Odyssey. You get from this movie what you bring to it

"How much would we appreciate La Giaconda [the Mona Lisa] today if Leonardo had written at the bottom of the canvas: 'This lady is smiling slightly because she has rotten teeth', or 'because she's hiding a secret from her lover'? It would shut off the viewer's appreciation and shackle him to a 'reality' other than his own. I don't want that to happen to 2001."

I really think this almost says it all. This movie has as much depth as you bring to it as a viewer. It was designed to be a mirror on humanity more than any kind of a commentary on it.That Kubrick was able to create such a unique quality in a scifi movie with a very dsitinct plot that would stand on it's own if the makers were lazy enough to give all the answers rather than ask all the questions is a remarkable achievement. I have no desire to try to convince anyone of the greatness of this movie if they have already failed to see it. This is a movie people have to discover for themselves. If you don't get it you don't get it. If you don't want to get it you won't get it.
