PBS's "Live from Lincoln Center" last night -- More unremittingly lowbrow pandering.

Alice Tully (chamber music) Hall is to be closed for renovations, hence a "special". I happened to tune in on a really excellent performance of the last movement of Mendelssohn's Octet, the performers, unusually, except for the seated cellists, standing. I was gripped!

The PBS announcer afterwards said, "And that was music by Felix Mendelssohn. Next..."

They know their target audience (known as "carriage trade") doesn't care what the work was.

Classical radio stations these days, go the same route. On WCRB I heard the finale to Beethoven's Ninth: "And finally we had Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, in music by Beethoven."

Good grief!
