An homage to Ozu by one of the New Wave in Taipei, "Cafe Lumiere."

But one can forget the inspiration and just enter the reverie which is this film. A young woman (played very effectively by a Japanese pop-singer sensation) finds she is pregnant but, to the dismay of her mother, is quite against marrying the successful father.
This quiet film shows the quotidian pursuits of this young writer as she researches the life of a Japanese composer, eliciting the help of her bookstore-owning friend. In a sensitive role which is an excellent primer on the zen of acting, "Zatoichi" star Tadanobu Asano assists her in her endeavor and provides much needed emotional support. No, there are no histrionics, big hugs, close-ups of anguished youth... Hsiao-hsien Hou is too masterful to need to resort to such theatricality.
You may come away from this urban story with the feeling that modern life has elevated individuality above communality at the price of human emotion. But you'd have to think about it: the director isn't about to hit you between the eyes.
Taiwan seems to be a hotbed of excellent film making: Tsai-ming Liang is another luminary with several superb films to his credit.
