I listened to the commentary on this movie. They said it was a "child" monster that was sort of unintentionally getting into trouble, though I didn't pick up on that viewing the movie for the first time.
Either an intelligent race sent this to soften us up, or it has intelligent parents, or who knows? Good point of yours though, the creature is hardly capable of producing interstellar drive mechanisms.
We'll have to agree to disagree about human caused global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along.
