Was Bogie an actor or a star?

I'd argue he was a magnificently talented actor who portrayed a variety of characters, though many of them were intense. After all, what did the characters in "High Sierra," "The Big Sleep," "The Caine Mutiny,"" In a Lonely Place,"" Casablanca," or "The African Queen" have in common?
Early in his career, Bogie portrayed criminals, many of them vicious killers. Throughout his later career, he tried to erase that stereotype.
The most amazing component of his talent was his pantomime skill: he could convey any emotion with his eyes, face, and body language. His mouth alone had more talent than many stars entire bodies: it could sneer, scowl, grimace, and smile with more nuances than any other performer.
Hero, lover, hoodlum, cynic, cold-blooded killer, maniac, gold-hearted softy----- any one of these broad categories has a Bogie performance which is a standard.
Can we say that about any "star?"
Bogie, like Bette Davis, had immense star power but, inside that brilliance, there was unsurpassed talent.
