"The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp." A fixture on Best

English Film lists.
This very clever film traces the career of a fictional British officer whose career spans 3 wars: Boer, WWI, WWII.
If you think FX did a good job with Brad Pitt in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," you won't believe how much better and believable Roger Livesey appears--- and his acting is sensational.
Anton Walbrook, as the German is his equal--- how often does a bravura performance have an equal? Almost astoundingly, Deborah Kerr plays 3 roles and matches the gentlemen's portrayals!
Powell (of the Pressburger partnership) considered this his masterwork and I don't know as I'd argue.
Yes, because it was made during the war, there are some propaganda moments which almost threaten to date the film but when one considers that the film is a realistic depiction of those days, they ring true.
Even though there are no battles, no armies decimated on screen, no horrific deaths, this film must be considered one of the most enduring comments upon war, upon violent human nature.
It is lusciously filmed in color, as a bonus.
