Help me identify a French police movie

Movies from comedy to drama to your favorite Hollyweird Star.

I don't have much to go on since I relying on my memory of watching this movie some 40 years ago. I do remember it was excellent and I would like to now see it again.

Made in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Set in Paris with the murder victim's house next to a river. The distinctive feature is that the chief police investigator was a woman. Not a hot Bardot type, but an attractive middle aged woman, as would befit such a position.
