"The King's Speech:" the kind of film I really, really wanted to

love, but the performances and screenplay let me down. First of all, Colin Firth just doesn't have the gravitas to play the King. And Geoffrey Rush, a fine character actor, also seems a bit too weightless. I don't know, perhaps having them reverse roles would have helped? There isn't a surprise in the entire film; you know exactly what is coming and how it's coming.
I dream of Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman in this film. The writing would still be mediocre, but the acting---- ah, I can't imagine any better than those two.
Don't get me wrong, it's good entertainment and your intelligence won't be insulted. Certainly, it's not like watching Jeff Bridges' stale cliché of a drunken sheriff.
