"The Horde": French cops, Nigerian criminals, and Zombies make strange bedfellows . . .

Ah, the French have such a way with horror movies with their gritty realism, fight choreography, and twisted plots. This film shows that not all "living dead" movies are created equal.

An elite French criminal squad lost a beloved member in a raid on a band of Nigerians and Czechs holding up in the top of a condemned hi-rise building. The grieving team think it's time for some payback and launch an off-the-books revenge attack. The attack did not go well and two of the flics are wounded and they are soon captured and tormented by the gang. But, as fate would have it, the city suddenly becomes a zombie infested zone with the undead charging around at full speed instead of the classic Frankenstein Walk. Now the cops and robbers must form an uneasy truce to get from the eleventh floor to the basement in order to escape the attacking zombos ready to knaw their flesh.

The zombies aren't like American zombies as they are much harder to stop. The crew just doesn't quite get the hang of delivering head shots and wastes a lot of ammo bringing them down. In the process two of the guys get bitten and you know what that means sooner or later.

Our elite cops and elite robbers are tough. They subdue several with fierce hand-to-hand combat and have plenty to say about it. There is an underlying French humor here and it peaked when a female zombie was subdued and several of the guys tormented her and seriously contemplated gang raping her. Take that, Rodriguez! In addition, they pick up an old French Viet Nam war vet who has been gleefully dispatching zombies with a pick axe to their heads. He turns out to be a big help.

Well, with the strong characterizations from the actors this film takes a more personal view of combating zombies for survival. No teens you just can't wait to get killed. Also, the French capacity for makeup, costume, and gore is in full bloom.

If you don't like visiting meat packing plants then this might not be for you. If you want to see a different slant to the undead throwing a monkey wrench into the nights planned proceedings then by all means stream this from Netfilx.
