RE: The Blacklist

Tonight, I tried to watch the pilot repeat. I lasted 20 minutes.

No matter how different and original these network dramas pretend to be they are always all the same.

James Spader, most wanted list mercenary, turns himself into the FBI. Will only speak freely with one agent. And guess who? Young, female, very beautiful about to start her 1st day with the field office as a profiler. Of course, her personal life is chaotic as gets up late with her scruffy, confused, nebbish boyfriend/husband (?). They are planning to adopt a child and it is very important she makes the meeting at 1:30 pm so they can plan their family.

Then as she steps out the door multiple screeching black vehicles pull up to her door with a helicopter hovering overhead. They whisk her away. Wouldn't one car pulling up discreetly to the curb be enough here?

The Special Agent In Charge asks her to profile herself when they bring her into the field office. After a reciting a litany of her accomplishments he tells her he read her resume. She begins by telling him her former co-workers called her "Sir" because she was a bitch!

No one knows why Spader wants her exclusively to tell her tales but he tries his best to do a poor man's Hannibal Lector improv. Maybe he sees her as his own personal Clarice Starling.

Spader tells her about a plot to kidnap a Pentagon Marine General's daughter by a terrorist the FBI thinks has been dead for the last 4 years. As she prepares to embark on the girl's rescue she has time to call the boyfriend/husband (?) to tell him she cannot make the adoption meeting. But...family is more important than anything. Bye, don't ask me any questions, this is classified, gotta go!

The FBI gets to the daughter first with a convoy. I saw this coming. They are stopped on a bridge by a lone flagman and all chaos ensues as they are ambushed by an army. Most of the FBI entourage are killed except for, you guessed it, our beautiful female star and a handsome male agent who appears will be a series regular. They watch as their precious cargo disappears into the distance on a speedboat. No backup FBI helicopters or marine craft pursue because no one calls it in. There was more heavy reinforcement present when they picked the agent up at her apartment. They just look sadly and longingly over the waters I will find you I am sure our beautiful FBI damsel is thinking.

Who writes this crap? Do these writers really have any idea what an FBI agent's life is like? Do they know you need a 4 year degree followed by an advanced accounting or law degree? This puts your age beyond high school. You also are transferred all over the country at the beginning. They own you 24/7. You would have more free time as a medical intern. And...Oh...one last thing: they are not all profilers!

Every time I say I will never watch another commercial network show I give them another chance and do it again. And those endless commercial breaks. Why do I keep torturing myself? I know commercial network TV can never be any better. Is the overall level of expectation of American viewership so low that the only artistic accomplishment left is on a marketing level, delivering an audience to a sponsor?
