Rush: a highly enjoyable night at the movies.

IMO Daniel Bruhl's portrayal of Nikki Lauda steals the film. Lauda was (is) famously direct, focused and socially blunt, a brilliant driver and astute analyst of his sport. He is IRL much the difficult personality as portrayed in the film . Currently an auto race broadcast commentator, Lauda is revered in his native Austria and still famous in racing circles - except in US which remains resistant to Formula One racing.

Hemsworth is very good as James Hunt, whom he remarkably resembles. He brings a welcome charm and vulnerability to a role that could have been a cliche. (The hard partying Hunt was rumored to have slept with 5000 (!!) women). Supporting cast is excellent but very much in background as the Hunt-Lauda rivalry takes center stage.

The racing scenes are terrific, the cinematography is gorgeous. Those of you you who were around in thethe 70s will find much to savor in background details. It's also a return to form of sorts for Howard, on a similar level to Frost/Nixon. I have a few minor issues with the script (a scene late in film where Hunt confronts a journalist) but Rush is very beautifully crafted and much better than I expected. If you like racing it's a must see.
