DiCaprio got the rights to the book about seven years ago but couldn't scare up the financing. He loved it because Belfort was embarrassingly honest about himself, his appetites, and his deeds. Sure, Belfort is a sleaze bag that cost a lot of people their money, but as you say, it really isn't about that. The original cut was just over four hours and the MPAA got back to Marty and said some drugs and breasts had to go which brings us down to three hours. Scorsese took a year to edit the whole thing which is why it seems to fly by like a two-hour film--you are getting the director's cut.

I enjoyed this (see down below) as an outrageous Roman spectacle of an era nearly gone by. Animal House meets Wall Street is the best way to label this raucous, ribald revelry with a twist...the bad guy does get jail time but not the 23 months not the 36 in the movie. So much for the outrage.

In the closing scene in Auckland, NZ, the announcer/introducer was the real Belfort. A real shorty, he showed the world one good time.
