anymore make a "serious" film, but he certainly outdid himself in the "over the top" sweepstakes. This film is mesmerizingly fun, unlike that monumental piece of greg, "Gangs of New York."
DiCaprio is very good, a little surprisingly. He has all the chops, but he can't hide the fact he's acting.
If you think this film is about a loony broker gone bad, you're missing the point. It's a rather amazing indictment of an entire country, it's priorities as seen in the aspirations and achievements of a guy determined to "make it."

DiCaprio got the rights to the book about seven years ago but couldn't scare up the financing. He loved it because Belfort was embarrassingly honest about himself, his appetites, and his deeds. Sure, Belfort is a sleaze bag that cost a lot of people their money, but as you say, it really isn't about that. The original cut was just over four hours and the MPAA got back to Marty and said some drugs and breasts had to go which brings us down to three hours. Scorsese took a year to edit the whole thing which is why it seems to fly by like a two-hour film--you are getting the director's cut.I enjoyed this (see down below) as an outrageous Roman spectacle of an era nearly gone by. Animal House meets Wall Street is the best way to label this raucous, ribald revelry with a twist...the bad guy does get jail time but 23 months not the 36 in the movie. So much for the outrage.
In the closing scene in Auckland, NZ, the announcer/introducer was the real Belfort. A real shorty, he showed the world one good time.

Wow, have I been an underachiever! I haven't even been to prison yet much less made millions and millions.
will there ever be "Director's" cuts of Scorsese's films that vary from the way his films have already been released?
Tons of unused film must be sitting around.
Wonder if he would/will destroy that unused film to firmly guarantee that NO ONE will ever fook around with his finished vision?
Wish Charlie Rose had raised the question when he had Scorsese and DiCaprio on recently for a WOWS chat.
Good topic of dinner conversation with him. He's on my top ten list of People I'd Love to Dine With.

So there's an hour of drugs and breasts out there waiting to be seen?
Let's hope for the blu ray version. :)
