'Love And Mercy": There's Oskies in them thar reels . . .

I was expecting some warmed over Baby Boomer feel goods so I had seriously low expectations. Within minutes it became strangely compelling. I couldn't stop focusing on the story or the people.

My first doubt was that Dano and Cusack look nothing like Brian Wilson. Every "boomer" knows his mug but when the opening shot showed Dano, with a little weight on him, I crossed the river of disbelief. Cusack became a harder sell but both deserve Oscar noms along with Banks and, of course, Giamatti (a tad over the top).

Not being a "rock groupie" I only knew BW had some mental issues but had no idea what a sick puppy he was from early on. Dano was superb being a young, naive Wilson who is plagued by a conflicting father and a worsening mental condition. As his life began to spiral out of control he fell under the care of Giamatti who was the true celebrity leech who managed to control every aspect of Wilson's life.

This film was superbly edited by the way it flashed back and forth switching camera styles from near documentary (Dano) to a more modern look (Cusack). The script, music was spot on.

The is truly a significant film for music junkies and film goers. During the closing credits we see the real BW performing live onstage as a "well person" sounding as perfect as he ever did.

What are you waitng for?
