'Captive': Holy Moly this industry is really growing . . .

I hear SONY has its own Inspirational Film division. There is an identifiable thirst for producing these things and people do see them. Of late, the casting has been climbing UP the ladder from C-string to B-String. Cage being in a remake of 'Left Behind' was a surprise. (Going bankrupt has that effect.) Now, we have a B++ casting for this "based on a true story" in the form of Kate Mara (House of Cards) and David Oyelowo (MLK).

Mara is attempting to recover from meth and regain custody of her daughter when she has the misfortune of crossing paths with Oyelowo. She's taken captive in her apartment and spends a very intense overnight with the cagey escapee who's already killed three other people that same day. By accident (?) she starts to read from one of Rick Warren's books and Oyelowo asks her to read it aloud. This seems to effect a change and the release of Mara with no further bloodshed.

This is actually a great dramatic film. Mara and Oyelowo are excellent in their concentration and depth. This is a good film from the acting side of the story as Olelowo oozes the anger and frustration at his predicament and how it happened in the first place. Mara was surprising in her focused performance of a woman trying to stay alive.

The inspirational message is not heavy-handed or overwhelming. In fact, (welcome spoiler) if you find such things unnecessary you can flip the channel when the real people appear on Oprah. The epilogue is interesting as they always are.

Even Damon talks to Jesus on Mars but not in this film. Quite a camparo, eh?
