'Rules Don't Apply': An old folks delight . . .

Where else can you see so many actors in their "twilight" years? A Beatty film, of course. Let's see, there's his spouse (Benning), Candice Bergen, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, Dabney Coleman, Matthew Broderick (who might as well be old), Ed Harris, and the list could go on and on. Only the two romantic leads keep our interest and compel us to sit it out: Lilly Collins (Marla) and Alden Ehrenreich (Frank). Collins is totally adorable as the Virgina-bred virgin who was inducted into Hughes acting harem while Frank (who started a week before as a driver) drives Marla around about to explode with desire. Thus, we have a young girl who wants a movie career while Frank wants Marla--career be damned.

Beatty played Hughes as mildly insane with a heavy dose of unpredictableness. His antics were mostly comical and his heavy-handed attempts to woo Marla are funny at first but soon lead to tragedy.

There wasn't a bad player in this very large cast. The script moved but I wonder if this story is fiction or has some degree of truth to it. It certainly seems it could be truthful. I wonder why Beatty decided on this near-forgotten mogul then realized that Beatty is no spring chicken so playing an eccentric older man allows him to be a lead once again.

All in all this film is silly but enjoyable. I found it compelling and Collins projected fresh-faced innocence that was very attractive. I'm going to let you decide whether to walk-in or wait for HBO.
